Babies

For those who were concerned by my last post: thank you for your prayers! Things are doing a lot better now. I'm exploring some good options for next year and feeling pretty hopeful about the future.

I had a really great lunch with my friend Ruth on Saturday. I found out that she, like me, is a little bit of what I joking call a "Catholic hippie." A mutual friend is training to be a birthing doula, she told me, and I'm thinking about going to the training weekend too (not as a full-time job, just as something fun on the side). Is it weird that I'm totally fascinated by childbirth? I also think it's a little sad that, for most American women, the first childbirth they ever see is their own baby's. How can you be properly prepared for giving birth if you've never even seen a birth before, besides the very over-dramatic versions they show on television? I think I would like to learn as much about the process as possible so I'll be prepared for it after I get married.

I have a new "hobby" these days: babysitting all the time! I even made some business cards for it. It's so much fun to watch these sweet children that I almost feel bad accepting money for it. On Saturday I watched a sweet two-year-old, and today I'm up early to watch a 10-month-old before she has to go to daycare. I texted Frank last night to ask if he could drive me to drop the baby off at daycare. Rather than being annoyed or refusing to do it, he laughed and said yes. He has the sweetest temper I've ever seen.

Happy Tuesday!

  1. Not its not weird. I have wanted to be a midwife for two years, I love everything about childbirth. Which might sound strange...But motherhood is such a beautiful calling and childbirth comes with it. :)

  2. That's exactly how I feel too. Glad to know I'm not the only one. :)

  3. Ahh, I would LOVE to be a midwife! I've never met or seen a doula in action but they seem pretty amazing!

  4. Right? I'm reading this great book right now (I might do a review of it some time) called Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and it's just blowing all my preconceived notions about birth out of the water. Such interesting stuff!
