In These Last Days

Joey, me, John. Have I mentioned I love these guys?

Last night I was perfectly happy. Joey invited me, Lillian, Laura L., Sam, and John to a swanky jazz club in Soho. I don't know much about music but jazz clubs are like baseball games - it's more about the relaxing atmosphere than about the event. Red velvet banquettes, black-vested waiters, dim moody lighting - this place had all the works.

The music was nice, and the saxophone player wore a suit like Mephistopheles. We sipped red wine and watched a cute elderly couple swing dancing next to the stage. We didn't talk but just enjoyed each other's company. I thought of that line - "I've got somewhere I belong, I've got somebody to love. This is what dreams are made of."

Then my grandma called me: "Does your mother know you are out after midnight??" Oh, Grandma. Welcome to college.

Tomorrow morning, 120 of the 130 Notre Dame students will fly home from London. Lillian and I will travel with our grandparents through Spain for 1 week, visiting my grandfather's cousins in their mountain village homes.

The London chapter of my life is coming to an end. I have loved it here and I never want to leave - and yet, I want nothing more than to go home. When I think of London, I will always think of that elegant jazz club, and the 5 people I love who went there with me. It was a perfect end to a beautiful semester.

  1. I can't believe you're coming back already! I'm glad you loved it in the end. I remember you weren't so sure in the beginning. When you go to grad school at Cambridge, I will visit all the time! For now, on to the NYC chapter. :)
