What a whirlwind week. I resigned from my old job at the university because they wanted me to continue working in the office full-time, and I just couldn't do that. I was incredibly anxious about how we would make ends meet without my income, but in perfect timing, I was offered a part-time editing job working from home for MTF. God is good. I joyfully accepted, of course, and went in for job training this morning while my mom watched Frankie.
I posted this on Facebook yesterday: "The new job will allow me to work from home so I can be a full-time mama
as well as a part-time editor. I'm grateful for this chance to grow my
career while caring for my family, and looking forward to learning the
balancing act of the working mom!" Little did I imagine how quickly that "balancing act" comment would become reality. This morning was a comedy of errors. Frankie decided to join the anti-sleep brigade and allowed me to get a total of 4 hours of (very interrupted) sleep last night. My pump stopped working so I was frantic trying to find a way to get milk for Frankie for the time my mom would be watching him (luckily it started working again after much fiddling). And right before I left the house this morning, the little one decided it was the perfect time to blow out his diaper ... all over my nice work blazer. GREAT. Somehow I still managed to make it to my training on time, and I won't have to go into the office again for a while so this won't be a regular occurrence. Bright sides abounding.
This is going to mean even more sporadic blogging, since working 20 hours a week plus 24/7 baby watching plus the whole cooking/cleaning/housekeeping routine does not a lot of free time make. I actually considered taking a break from blogging for a while, but then I realized I couldn't do that, because blogging is my release and I would be even more stressed without it. Thanks for your patience, guys. I'm going to try to make up in quality what my posts will lack in quantity.
Aaaaand here's a random pic of us at a wedding over the weekend, because it's just not a post without a visual, right?
By the way, Land's End wins my heart forever and ever. Their dresses are cute, affordable, modest, AND nursing-friendly. Best of all worlds.
p.s. My mom snapped this photo of Frankie and me to celebrate my first day as a working mom:
It's going great so far!

7 Quick Takes
I think this is the second, maybe third, time I've ever done 7QT. But I had all these stray photos hanging out on my phone, none worth their own blog post, so I figured I'd jump on Jen's awesome bandwagon.
1. Today is the feast of St. Francis—which means it's my husband's feast day!
Frank was raised Protestant so this was his first time celebrating his saint's day.
I, meanwhile, was raised in a Cuban family that made a huge deal out of saint's days. It's like another birthday for us.
So I started the day off right with a big homemade breakfast to surprise him when he woke up...
I really wanted to have a cake or cupcake for him, but I ran out of time to make anything big. A Buzzfeed article inspired me to make a mug cake instead. That's the thing in the blue bowl. I even stuck a candle on top—so fancy. :)
Happy feast day to all Franks, Francises, and Franciscos out there—and especially to Pope Francis!
2. My mom bought me this darling handmade wreath last time we went to Naper Settlement:
It's been making me really happy lately. It brightens up our home so much.
2. Every day on the drive home, I pass "my favorite house" down the street. I can't get enough of those pretty flowers growing all over the porch:
Isn't that an impressive garden for a crowded little city street? Someday I hope to meet the talented gardener and compliment him/her on the lovely work.
3. It's been unseasonably warm these past few days. When work allows it, I like to sneak out to the quad and eat lunch on the grass.
Sometimes I even slip off my shoes and bask in the sunshine. :)
Indian Summer, you stay as long as you like.
4. I can't thank Jen enough for linking to this amazing website and in particular this list of organizational tips. I've been trying to incorporate a few of those into my life.
My favorite so far is the tip to line clothes up horizontally in drawers, so everything is visible:
It's already made my life so much easier and neater!
5. Going back to the topic of breakfast, lately I've been addicted to crunchy peanut butter on whole grain toast (with a side of orange juice, of course):
Smooth peanut butter doesn't quite do it for me, but crunchy just hits the spot.
Is that weird—peanut butter for breakfast? I never had it for breakfast before, but lately I really love it.
6. Katrina inspired me to make this amazing one-pot mac and cheese. I was inspired to get all Pioneer Woman and take photos of the process...
This is what happens when I have too much time on my hands.
First up, "The Cast of Characters"
Just-added-to-the-pot elbow pasta plus butter and milk:
Adding in the cheese. MMMM.
(I think I need to clean my stove.)
Aaaannnnnnd the finished product. Ta-da!
That was a fun one to make and just as easy as it sounds. I'll definitely be adding it to the regular rotation.
7. The last take is actually the most important. I have an exciting announcement to share!
You guys know how interested I am in Montessori education, mostly thanks to my awesome friend Ruth who runs a Montessori school in Virginia.
For a while I thought about training to be a Montessori teacher, but the time and money commitment was too much for this stage in my life.
Ruth suggested that I train in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd instead—the Montessori method of religious education. The training is a lot less intense, and you can easily find work on a part-time or volunteer basis. Considering I work full-time at the university, that low commitment sounded perfect.
I began looking into Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) training courses in my area, and this week I made the jump and registered for one. The classes start on Saturday and run until April 2015 (just one class per month).
I'm so excited to begin this course! Yesterday I bought a pretty new notebook for the class, and when I got home I organized all my course materials in a nice stack on my dresser. It felt like back-to-school, for the first time in three years. :)
Wish me luck!

The students are back!
I have a giant post about the rest of our road trip to New York in the works. But in the mean time, there's something I'm really excited about.
I've probably mentioned that I work for a university doing communications. I started working here in May and pretty much right after I got back from my wedding/honeymoon, the kids had moved home for the summer. Campus was peaceful and quiet for the past few months. But now ...
The students are finally back on campus!
They're playing Frisbee on the quad! They're clogging up my favorite campus cafes! Their bikes are taking up the whole sidewalk ... and I don't even care, because it's so much fun having them back. They give the whole campus so much more energy.
Today I went to noon Mass at the Catholic chaplaincy on campus, and I found out they're offering free lunch after Mass all week to welcome the students back. Isn't that nice? I considered pretending I was a freshman for a hot second before my sense of decorum won out. Next time.
Work is more fun too, because I get to create fun albums like this on the University's Facebook page. Good times. (And now you all know where I work. Shhh. Don't tell!)
This is pretty much the best week ever. Frank and I went to the Notre Dame game on Saturday and we saw so many awesome people I can't even begin to name them all. Special thanks to Mary for letting us park at her place and Candida for hosting us for dinner. Sadly we missed seeing Katrina, but next time—the dream lives on! Tonight my friend Theresa is coming over for dinner, and on Thursday Vanessa is spending the night with us on her way to Notre Dame. This little extrovert is one happy camper. And as though all that weren't enough, Frank and I finally cleared out our bedroom on Sunday (you can close the closet doors now! It's a whole new world) and last night we got our Chicago library cards! Library cards are the best cards, I say.

My New Commute
Quite a few things have changed since I moved from Chicago to DC.
My mom makes my lunch every day (she's the best), so no more hasty lunch-packing in the morning.
Saturday mornings are spent playing with my little siblings instead of sleeping in.
I get to see Frank every day (my favorite change).
But perhaps the biggest change is my commute.
No more gnarly, underground DC metro for me.
Living way out in the suburbs, I take the Metra train every morning.
^^The train leaves from this darling little station in my childhood town. I bought my Metra pass from the ticket agent who's there every morning. A real live ticket agent!
^^Waiting on the platform, I can see the village green, town hall, and town library. It's a refreshing sight in the mornings.
^^The interior is set up with old-fashioned cushioned benches. There's a narrow upper level too with even more seating.
And best of all, it's above ground the whole way, with nice views of the Chicago suburbs for much of it.
The Metra is a pretty nice ride. Even though my commute is a lot longer here than it was in DC, I can't say I mind all that much.

Things We'll Miss About DC, Part 5
My last day at work was Wednesday. My last day being a book editor. (cue tears)
I am really, really going to miss my office and the people I work with.
I've loved working at this publishing company. I've loved reading all these interesting books, polishing up my grammar, and learning how a book goes from a manuscript in Microsoft Word to a beautifully bound hardcover masterpiece.
Most of all I've loved the people I've worked with.
Let me introduce you to just one of them.

Extreme Levels of Excitement!
This book, my friends.
This book.
It was one of the first books I worked on from start to finish at my new job, and yesterday, we got the paperback copies in to the office. Aren't they beautiful? (seriously... how much do you love that cover??). I started squeaking with excitement when I saw it, making all the Publicity people laugh.
You can't imagine what it was like editing this baby. I'm not a military history fan and this book is 689 looooong pages of gory, extensive, exhaustive details about the Civil War. But I got through it! And the author (bless him) even complimented my work when it was done.
I couldn't be more proud and excited to be holding this book in my hands. Dad's Christmas present? Probably. And hey, if you know a military history fan in your life, buy him this book... you won't regret it. I promise. Plus it has my name in the Acknowledgements, so if you're really really desperate to know my last name, this is obviously the cheapest, fastest, and easiest way for you to find out. ;)
Oh man. What can I say? I love my job.
(p.s. One of my co-workers sent me this blog... at first I was like "this is my life!!" but then I was like "actually my life is nowhere near that glamorous" ... bottom of the publishing house totem pole right here. But this one really is my life and that makes it all awesome!)
