My New Commute

Quite a few things have changed since I moved from Chicago to DC.

My mom makes my lunch every day (she's the best), so no more hasty lunch-packing in the morning.

Saturday mornings are spent playing with my little siblings instead of sleeping in.

I get to see Frank every day (my favorite change).

But perhaps the biggest change is my commute.

No more gnarly, underground DC metro for me.

Living way out in the suburbs, I take the Metra train every morning.

^^The train leaves from this darling little station in my childhood town. I bought my Metra pass from the ticket agent who's there every morning. A real live ticket agent!

^^Waiting on the platform, I can see the village green, town hall, and town library. It's a refreshing sight in the mornings.

^^The interior is set up with old-fashioned cushioned benches. There's a narrow upper level too with even more seating.

And best of all, it's above ground the whole way, with nice views of the Chicago suburbs for much of it.

The Metra is a pretty nice ride. Even though my commute is a lot longer here than it was in DC, I can't say I mind all that much.

  1. Compared to most trains, the Metra is pretty nice-I miss all my reading time now. Plus you're lucky that you actually get 'Quiet' cars going into the city! I had a reverse commute (into the suburbs), and Metra gave me some lame excuse about staffing and schedules for not enforcing quiet zones on outbound trains. It made me feel like a 2nd class commuter :(

    1. Aw, that is lame. Funny, I didn't even realize there were 'quiet' cars! I'll have to keep an eye out for those...

  3. Rode the Metra from Kenosha to Evanston - Central for three months last fall. Quite a long commute, but the train makes it interesting! And I loved the conductors. We'll be near a Metra stop where we are moving and I'm very excited to be able to take it into Downtown Chicago for fun!
