7 Quick Takes: Favorite Parenting Articles

I forward articles to Frank almost constantly on parenting, families, education, and all those other topics I love. I thought it would be a good idea to round up a few of them here so I remember them for later!

At church on Christmas Eve. We have no clue what we are getting ourselves in for when this baby comes...

1. Design Mom rounded up some thought-provoking advice in a post called I wish someone had told me.... My favorite words of wisdom, especially given our coming addition:
"I wish I had known newborns aren’t newborns for a year. I wish someone had told me that period only lasts six weeks max. I wish I had gotten that through my head the first time round and just sat down, cuddled, and pressed my cheek to the top of their fuzzy heads more..."

2. I loved this recent article from the fabulous Kathryn called Applying to Catholic School? 10 Questions Every Parent Should Ask. The questions are so thoughtful, especially her emphasis on exposing kids to religious vocations!

3. Frank forwarded Your first 90 days as a father to me and it was great. Well done, Esquire! (Note: the sidebar on the Esquire website may contain inappropriate images. Click through with caution.)

4.  Anthony Esolen has done it again with a great piece called How Common Core devalues great literature.

5. I was thrilled to see that Auntie Leila is publishing a book on building a life of prayer in families. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy!

6. My new favorite parenting article is called How I made sure all 12 of my kids could pay for college themselves. This attitude stands in direct contrast to our modern culture of entitlement. I don't know that this method of child-rearing is exactly replicable, but it is fascinating.

7. Just for laughs... I'm obsessed with Why my kid is crying. Cracks me up every time.

What are your favorite articles on parenting?

And a bonus article on faith in families...

Jen linked to Hiding Eggs and Finding Faith this week and I loved it.

That's all for now, folks. Thank you Jen for hosting!

7 Quick Takes

I think this is the second, maybe third, time I've ever done 7QT. But I had all these stray photos hanging out on my phone, none worth their own blog post, so I figured I'd jump on Jen's awesome bandwagon.

1. Today is the feast of St. Francis—which means it's my husband's feast day!

Frank was raised Protestant so this was his first time celebrating his saint's day.

I, meanwhile, was raised in a Cuban family that made a huge deal out of saint's days. It's like another birthday for us.

So I started the day off right with a big homemade breakfast to surprise him when he woke up...

I really wanted to have a cake or cupcake for him, but I ran out of time to make anything big. A Buzzfeed article inspired me to make a mug cake instead. That's the thing in the blue bowl. I even stuck a candle on top—so fancy. :)

Happy feast day to all Franks, Francises, and Franciscos out there—and especially to Pope Francis!

2. My mom bought me this darling handmade wreath last time we went to Naper Settlement:

It's been making me really happy lately. It brightens up our home so much.

2. Every day on the drive home, I pass "my favorite house" down the street. I can't get enough of those pretty flowers growing all over the porch:

Isn't that an impressive garden for a crowded little city street? Someday I hope to meet the talented gardener and compliment him/her on the lovely work.

3. It's been unseasonably warm these past few days. When work allows it, I like to sneak out to the quad and eat lunch on the grass.

Sometimes I even slip off my shoes and bask in the sunshine. :)

Indian Summer, you stay as long as you like.

4. I can't thank Jen enough for linking to this amazing website and in particular this list of organizational tips. I've been trying to incorporate a few of those into my life.

My favorite so far is the tip to line clothes up horizontally in drawers, so everything is visible:

It's already made my life so much easier and neater!

5. Going back to the topic of breakfast, lately I've been addicted to crunchy peanut butter on whole grain toast (with a side of orange juice, of course):

Smooth peanut butter doesn't quite do it for me, but crunchy just hits the spot.

Is that weird—peanut butter for breakfast? I never had it for breakfast before, but lately I really love it.

6. Katrina inspired me to make this amazing one-pot mac and cheese. I was inspired to get all Pioneer Woman and take photos of the process...

This is what happens when I have too much time on my hands.

First up, "The Cast of Characters"

Just-added-to-the-pot elbow pasta plus butter and milk:

Adding in the cheese. MMMM.

(I think I need to clean my stove.)

Aaaannnnnnd the finished product. Ta-da!

That was a fun one to make and just as easy as it sounds. I'll definitely be adding it to the regular rotation.

7. The last take is actually the most important. I have an exciting announcement to share!

You guys know how interested I am in Montessori education, mostly thanks to my awesome friend Ruth who runs a Montessori school in Virginia.

For a while I thought about training to be a Montessori teacher, but the time and money commitment was too much for this stage in my life.

Ruth suggested that I train in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd instead—the Montessori method of religious education. The training is a lot less intense, and you can easily find work on a part-time or volunteer basis. Considering I work full-time at the university, that low commitment sounded perfect.

I began looking into Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) training courses in my area, and this week I made the jump and registered for one. The classes start on Saturday and run until April 2015 (just one class per month).

I'm so excited to begin this course! Yesterday I bought a pretty new notebook for the class, and when I got home I organized all my course materials in a nice stack on my dresser. It felt like back-to-school, for the first time in three years. :)

Wish me luck!

7 Quick Takes

I haven't done one of these in forever!

1. Frank and I have started a new little custom of reading a psalm every night before we go to bed. It is awesome. There's something about regular Bible reading that just makes life better.

2. My dearest Maggie gave birth to her firstborn, a little boy, two weeks ago. Now she is in town visiting with the newborn, and I get to see her and the baby tonight!!!

I may have bounced excitedly out of bed this morning because of this little fact. And I'm trying to memorize this helpful article in an effort to handle everything just right.

3. Have you ever read The Shadow of His Wings? I finished it on Tuesday and I can't remember the last time a book made me cry, and laugh, like this one. If you are looking for your next amazing book ... pick up this one!

4. BlogHer 2013 is in Chicago this weekend, which I found out via a sign on my way to work yesterday. I toyed with the idea of crashing for a hot second (anything to see Ree!) but ... nah. Is anyone going to be in town for it?

5. There's also a Catholic homeschooling conference near Chicago this weekend. Frank is very open to homeschooling—he was homeschooled and loved it—while I wasn't homeschooled and am more hesitant (for a bunch of reasons I won't go into right now). Anyway, Frank thought I might enjoy the conference, and Laura's mom sweetly offered to accompany me (she homeschools her girls). I'm trying to figure out if I should go, and if it's even possible at this point (the weekend is shaping up to be a busy one).

6. At dinner on Sunday, I found out that my parents' sweet exchange student had never had pie.

In fact she'd never even heard of pie.

Apparently pie isn't a thing in Spain.

So we decided to teach her how to make an apple pie that very night—prompting lots of "American as apple pie" remarks from Caroline's visiting friends.

She and Angela slicing up apples:

Her first bite:

She said she really liked it!

7. While we made the pie, I asked Caroline if she wanted me to make anything special while her friends were over.

She requested s'mores bars.

Have you ever tried s'mores bars? If you're looking for something to bake this weekend, I recommend these. They're a definite crowd-pleaser!

Happy Friday, dear friends! And thank you to Jen for hosting!

Seven Quick Takes: Things I Want to Remember

— 1 —

Yesterday my friend Nick posted this on Facebook: "As it is the feast day of my namesake saint, St. Nicholas, and he reportedly punched the heretic Arius, I have decided that in his honor I too will punch a heretic... Anybody know a heretic?" Ha!

All the funny St. Nick's stuff on Facebook yesterday had me laughing. This meme was my favorite:

So... I didn't even realize it was the Feast of St. Nicholas yesterday until I got to work -- somehow putting candy in shoes is less of a priority without kids in the house! Hopefully Frank and I will have little ones in the next few years, though, and when we do I plan to steal some of these great ideas from AnaHaley and Lindsay.

Have you seen the Most Powerful Images of 2012? I'm enthralled and slightly obsessed. My favorites are 7, 33, and 44... and some of the others definitely had me tearing up. Which are your favorites?

I found out about this video series in a recent email from my alma mater. I really appreciate Notre Dame's efforts to embrace its Catholic intellectual tradition, and these videos look GREAT. Can't wait to watch them all!

— 4 —

Speaking of Notre Dame, have you heard of the Edith Stein Project? It's the single best conference on campus, every year. If you are interested in the Theology of the Body, human sexuality, femininity, masculinity, vocations to marriage or religious life -- heck, if you're just interested in being human -- and you're in the area, consider attending. You won't regret it.

— 5 —

I've been enjoying this daily Home Tour series on Mattie's cute blog Somethings, and this post about a couple's "First Married Christmas" made me think of Frank and me. That will be us next year. Can't wait!

You've probably already heard about Verily magazine (greatest thing to hit women's magazines since ... the invention of women's magazines). This photo and quote from their blog really struck a chord:

Beautiful.

Verily has a great blog, by the way, and is always looking for new writers. Ladies, interested in freelance writing? Submit a post to Verily!

I was tooling around looking for some Advent reflections online when I stumbled on this little video about faith in your 20s ... featuring a girl I know from home! What a small world.

Then I found this video about the Year of Faith and what it means to young people, and well, it made my day. I'm going to keep a look-out for the rest of the videos in the "Faith at 20" series.

Thanks for reading! Head over to Jen's blog for all the others.

Seven Quick Takes

It's my first time ever taking part in Jen Fulwiler's 7 Quick Takes. I feel like this means I've "arrived" as a Catholic blogger. :)

- 1 -

Frank is coming with me to Chicago this weekend! It's his first time visiting my family and I'm so excited I can't even stand it. I'm grinning right now just thinking about it.

- 2 -

It's only his third or fourth time riding an airplane, so I walked him through the online check-in process, which I loved. It's fun to feel like an expert from time to time, even on something as little as riding a plane.

- 3 -

The next 12 hours are going to be pretty wild. First we're going to the reception for the CIC's first-annual John Paul II dinner. We have to take all our luggage to the reception and change clothes there, because right afterwards we're catching a train to the airport. Then we have our 8:50 pm flight, arriving in Chicago at 10 pm, and giving Frank a fast evening tour of my home and introducing him to Cathy (my one sister he hasn't met yet). Then there will be a bunch of crazy preparations for Maggie's bridal shower at 11 am tomorrow!

Lillian sent me a list of my jobs for the shower and hopefully I can get them all done before 11 am tomorrow. Thank goodness Lillian and I are both Maggie's Maids of Honor because one of us is way more organized and efficient than the other, and I'll give you one guess who.

- 4 -

Are you looking for something to do this weekend? Consider going to see For Greater Glory, the spectacular new film about the Cristero Revolution in Mexico in the early 1900s, which was released today.

Source

I saw an advance screening with Frank and I was impressed. Unlike some Christian films (Fireproof, for example, which was cheesy and awkward), this movie was an artistic masterpiece: beautifully made, excellently directed and with an impressive roster of big-name actors. It was awesome. I can't remember the last time I was so inspired by a movie - or felt so personally invested in its cause.

I noticed several rows of little boys around age 12 at the movie screening. I kind of wondered why they were there. I learned after the film that they're all altar boys at local Catholic churches. Whoever thought to invite them made a smart move. This movie is perfect for boys in their early and mid teens - and for girls too. Please go see it and take any teens you know too.

- 5 -

I just read on BadCatholic about the most beautiful new initiative called Imagine Sisters.

Amazing, exciting stuff. The Church can always use more vocations to the religious life. I'm so glad that the sisters are recruiting for new vocations more actively.

- 6 -

Remember a while back when I joked about making myself babysitting business cards with a Mary Poppins theme?  Well, I finally did it.

So cute, right? If you know anyone in the DC or VA area looking for a babysitter, send them my way!

- 7 -

I have two favorite churches near my hometown. There is St. Isaac Jogues, my family's parish, which has the most wonderful pastor and feels like home. Then there is St. Mary of the Angels, which is ridiculously gorgeous and has a plethora of great priests (and GREAT preaching). Hence my dilemma: which church should we take Frank to on Sunday? I wish we could go to both!

My mom suggested that I could take Frank to 8 am Mass on Saturday at St. Isaac's and then go with the family on Sunday to St. Mary's. That sounds like a good compromise... if we can actually wake up early enough on Saturday.

Between traveling, the bridal shower and reception, showing Frank around my hometown and catching up with a bunch of old friends from high school and college, this weekend will be a busy one! I can't wait.
